There is no global obligation for South African companies to disclose if they have been the subject of ransomware attacks.

In the demanding hours and days after hackers have breached your computer system, encrypted vital data and demanded a ransom in cryptocurrency, you should fight against the urge to pay a ransom, the co-founder of a South African cybersecurity company has said.

“Take the hit, no matter how hard it is,” says Stephen Osler of cybersecurity company Nclose. According to Osler, paying will only incentivise criminals to keep targeting you with no guarantee that you or your company will get your data back.

Ransomware attacks, which target major international companies and individuals, occur when hackers insert malicious software into computers, preventing users from accessing their data.
